Free plugins for FL Studio
Answer in brief
FL Studio loads VST3 and CLAP plugins on Windows and Mac and AU on the Mac, so free plugins made for other DAWs work in it too. Pick the VST3 version if you move projects between a PC and a Mac.
Which formats FL Studio loads
Image-Line’s manual lists VST, VST3 and CLAP for FL Studio on Windows. On macOS it adds AU to those three. A free plugin that comes in one of those formats works in FL Studio just as it does in Ableton Live or Reaper. Surge XT is one of the free synths that also offers CLAP.
Pick VST3 if you switch between Windows and Mac
AU exists only on the Mac, while VST3 runs on both. If you start a beat on a Windows laptop and finish it on a Mac, use the VST3 version on each so FL Studio looks for the same plugin. Install the same version on both computers as well.
Where a new plugin shows up in FL Studio
Run the maker’s installer with its default settings, as Image-Line recommends. Then the Plugin manager (Options > File settings > Manage plugins) finds the new plugin and sorts it into generators or effects. FL Studio calls instruments generators and puts them in the Channel rack. Effects go in a Mixer insert.
A free starter set for FL Studio
FL Studio comes with instruments and effects of its own. Add a free plugin where one of those falls short instead of replacing them all at once.
- Splice INSTRUMENT for free piano and texture presets; Splice names FL Studio among the DAWs it supports.
- Vital or Surge XT for synth parts.
- TDR Nova for EQ and TDR Kotelnikov for the master or a bus.
- Valhalla Supermassive for reverb and long echoes.
- Youlean Loudness Meter, which names FL Studio among the DAWs it runs in, with Voxengo SPAN beside it.
Studio 56 in FL Studio
Studio 56 also runs in FL Studio, as VST3 on Windows and as VST3 or AU on a Mac. It is not free. When none of the free tools has the sound you want, you describe it and Studio 56 builds it. Instruments play in Studio 56 and effects in Studio 56 FX, both inside FL Studio.
Questions and answers
Can FL Studio load CLAP plugins?
Yes. Image-Line’s manual lists CLAP on both Windows and macOS, and Surge XT is a free synth that ships in that format.
